Indiana Republican Governor. Eric Holcomb signed a Friday night bill that would prohibit most abortions.
The new law prohibits the practice except in the cases of incest, rape, and to protect the mother’s life and health. Incest and rape are not allowed after 10 weeks. The victim would no longer be required to sign a notarized statement attesting to the attack.
If a fetus has a lethal anomaly, abortions will be permitted.
The bill states that abortions cannot be performed outside hospitals or in outpatient centers owned and operated by hospitals. All abortion clinics will lose their licenses. Physicians who perform illegal abortions and fail to file the required reports will also lose a medical license.

Since June’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Indiana has been the first state to pass new legislation restricting abortion access. After West Virginia legislators turned down the chance to become the first, Indiana became the first state that passed a ban in both chambers.
Holcomb released a statement saying that, “Following Roe being overturned, I stated clear that I would be willingly to support legislation that makes progress in protecting life.” “In my opinion,” Holcomb stated. [the abortion law]This is the goal.
Just hours after the House passed the legislation by a vote of 62 to 38, the Indiana Senate approved it 28 to 19.
Rep. Wendy McNamara of the GOP stated that Indiana has become “one the most prolife states in America” after the House vote.

Ann Vermilion, another Republican Rep., attacked members of her party who called women “murderers”, because they have had an abortion.
“I think that the Lord’s promise is for grace and kindness,” she said. “He would not jump to condemn these ladies.”
Eight Republicans voted against this bill in the Senate with the 11 Democrats.
Jean Breaux, Democratic Senator, wore a green ribbon to her lapel Friday to show her support for abortion access.
“We are slipping in democracy,” she stated. “What other freedoms and liberties are being rescinded?”
GOP Senator Mike Bohacek said that the legislation did not provide adequate protections for women with disabilities who have been raped. His 21-year old daughter has Down syndrome.
Republican Senator Sue Glick stated that she doesn’t believe all states will fall at the same time, but that the majority of Indiana residents support certain aspects of the bill.

The ban will go into effect on September 15.
Holcomb stated that “To the peoples of Indiana, I assure you that the democratic procesm marches on” and that he would continue to reach out for input to all elected officials to make their voices heard. “Retrospectively, I am proudest of every Hoosier who bravely shared their views in a debate which is unlikely to end soon. As your governor, I will keep my ears open.
Indiana Senate Democrats lash out at the ban on Twitter.
According to the group, there was “a massive government overreach.” State-mandated pregnancy. A loss of rights for women. A failure in democracy. Call it what you want – it’s a stain on our state.”
