The White House condemned China’s closing of engagement with the United States on “critical issues”, including climate. They called it “fundamentally irresponsible” and “a punishing not just America, but the whole world.”
China has temporarily suspendedAll planned discussions with the U.S. about key international issues in retaliation for the U.S. congressional delegation’s trip to Taiwan.
Beijing announced Friday that the Chinese Communist Party had canceled all discussions on climate change, drug networks, and military action.
China attributed the decision to Nancy Pelosi is the House SpeakerA congressional delegation and their trip in Taiwan.
White House National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby stressed the importance of open lines of communication between the United States and China.
“I’m sure you will see the announcements by China today that they are closing down engagement with the United States on a range of critical issues to include climate change … we believe that this is fundamentally irresponsible,” Kirby said. China is not only punishing the United States by this act, but also punishing the entire globe with these actions.”

He said, “The world’s biggest emitter is refusing to take critical steps to address the climate crisis.”
Kirby stressed that “lines of communication are important to help reduce risk, miscalculations and misperception.”
Kirby stated, however, that not all communications channels are closed.

Kirby stated that the bottom line was that “we’re going to keep our efforts open to communicate with Beijing while defending ourselves and our values in this region,” adding that not all communication channels between military leaders have been closed.
Thursday’s White House summoned China’s ambassador to the White House to clarify its position on their provocative actions.

Kirby explained that Beijing’s actions were of concern to her as well as Taiwan and the rest.
Kirby stated that the Biden administration explained during the meeting so that the Chinese ambassador understood clearly and without any doubt that there was no change in America’s “One China” policy.
The United States delayed its scheduled test of an intercontinental missile-capable ballistic missile this week amid rising tensions with Beijing. Meanwhile, China has deployed numerous military aircraft and missiles to the Taiwan Strait in recent times.
“We do not believe it is in our interests, Taiwan’s interests, the region’s interests to allow tensions to escalate further, which is why a long-planned Minuteman III ICBM test scheduled for this week has been rescheduled for the near future,” Kirby said at a White House briefing Thursday.
