Should Ime Udoka violate team rules, the Boston Celtics could hire an interim head coach to replace him.
Multiple reports indicate that Udoka will be suspended for a full season by the Celtics. However, Boston may make Joe Mazzulla their interim coach.
Mazzulla, 34, has been on the Celtics’ bench since 2019. He was an assistant at Glenville State and Fairmont State between 2011 and 2016 and then was an assistant on the Celtics’ G League team, Maine Red Claws. Before returning to Boston, he was Fairmont State’s head coach from 2017-1919.
Mazzulla was a student of Bob Huggins at West Virginia. He was part of the team that defeated Kentucky in the 2010 Elite Eight, before losing to Duke in The Final Four.
He had interviewed for the Utah Jazz’s head coaching position that ultimately went to Will Hardy.
Late Wednesday, word came out that Udoka could be suspended for the season because of a rules violation.

Multiple reports later indicated that Udoka was alleged to have had a consensual, intimate relationship with a female staff member and it “was considered to be a violation of the organization’s guidelines.”
Udoka (45), has been living with Nia Long since 2010. Long is known for her roles in “Big Momma’s House,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Love Jones” among others. She has one son with Long, while she also has a son from an earlier relationship.
In his first season with the Celtics in 2021-2022, Udoka led Boston to the Eastern Conference Finals, where his team defeated the Miami Heat to take a trip to the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors would win.
The No.2 seed in the Eastern Conference, Celtics reached the playoffs. The Celtics finished as the No. 2 seed of the Eastern Conference, with 51-31 wins. Udoka became only the fifth coach to make it to the Finals in his first season as head coach.
